POST-6 FREE MEALS TO STUDENTS FOR TWO DECADES

Our school provided free meals to the students coming from far-off villages, even from mid-1930s, This continued for more than 12 years, The main inspiration for this great achievement was the Head Master, Sri Singaraju Srinivasa Rao. He, followed by some members of staff, used to go round the town every month, to collect donations of grain and other commodities from the philanthropists. Many times it happened so, that the donors sent these donations on just a word from the Head Master through his messenger. Several caste-wise hostels were maintained in the private buildings in nearby surrounding areas of the school. Sri Polisetty Subbarayudu memorial charitable Trust sponsored the mid-day meals programme for several years till late 1940s. With the establishment of Municipal Girls High School in 1948, Perala High School in 1951 and Bandla Bapaiah Hindu High School in 1950 in Vetapalem and also some more High Schools in nearby villages: there was no need to continue this Free Meals Programme and hence stopped. However, Polisetty Subbarayudu Charitable Trust supplied free Text books to poor students till 1980s; and now the trust headed by Polisetty Sriramachandra Murthy is supplying free note-books to poor students of not only our school but of several other schools in the town every year! Hats off to the Trust!

There were many interesting tales about the regime of Sri Singaraju Srinivasa Rao, as Head Master. One of them reflects his daring and undaunted spirit, though he was short just like Lal Bahadur Sasthriji, Ex-Prime Minister Of India. 

Quit- India movement shaked the entire country, and Chirala is not an exception. Some of our students were actively involved in setting Chirala Railway Station ablaze in 1943. Those days, the station was located near the north cabin. Police wanted to identify the offenders and an English Officer came to the school followed by some policemen. The Officer straight away entered some classes and started creating terror. Soon the Head Master came to know about this and rushed to the class-room where the police was carrying their search. The Head Master publicly objected to the Officer’s entry straight into claasrooms without the Head Master’s prior permission and warned the policeman that he is straight away going to complain to the police higher authorities. The Officer realized his mistake and returned to the HM’s room. 

Then the HM proposed to the Officer that he would conduct School Assembly within a little time after the school commences for evening session- to which the Officer agreed. Meanwhile, a secret message was passed to all classes about the assembly and its purpose. All the students were asked to attend the assembly in school-uniform without fail. When the school was assembled in the play ground in the evening, the policemen searched for the offenders among the assembled students several times, but of no use, because the offenders got ample time to escape! Didn’t the HM know that some of his students were involved in setting fire to the station? He is also a patriotic Indian with national fervour.
